Resources & climate: Compared to Europe (Spain in this case) both South Korea and Japan are resource poor: They only produce food for 30-40% population, have low amount of mineral and import most of their energy. Spain imports lot of food, but exports huge amount of fruits and vegetables. Below are population densities per square km: - Spain: 96 - Japan: 343 (actually 1000 if you consider liveable area alone) - Korea: 530 Many parts of Japan particularly have harsh climate. Suffers from Typhoons, Earthquakes and Tsunamis. Most of Korea is also mountainous 3. Near Shoring: European nations benefit from 'near shoring'. Spain is large automobile producer, benefits from proximity with other European nations. European and Japanese have to work extra hard to make their cars more cost effective for imports in far away Europe. Spain also benefits from lot of outsourcing, particularly in IT and call center services. Also, Japan and Korea face intense competition from China for their products. Spain has some solid niches. 4. Immigration: 18% Spanish population is foreign born; compared to just 3% in Korea and Japan. Japan and Korea are paying a price by working harder for having a more homogenous society.
