The 7.5% involuntary resignations were split as follows - about 2/3 were reductions-in-force (i.e., elimination of functions) and 1/3 were probationary terminations (i.e., employees with less than 1 or 2 years of service).
As with any new administration, @realDonaldTrump has new and different priorities for which he was elected. Increasing the efficiency of the workforce and ensuring that we have the right talent focused on the right objectives are key priorities. To put this story into context, of the ~300,000 employees who have left the federal government in 2025, ~92.5% were voluntary resignations. 155,000 employees received 8 months of severance in connection with their resignation - that is more generous than nearly any private sector severance package; 27,000 took other federal severance/early retirement programs (VERA & VSIP); and the rest resigned.
This was interesting because it revealed how many people actually believed “buying $6b of food” would solve the problem.
