Turns out there was a mystery a few bars later: this short transition is completely different in my favorite recording (Arrau), much more disjointed/modernist. And that’s just the most obvious divergence, many things sound *very* different.
In fact, there are two major different versions, a French and a German one. Publishers used to default to German as that’s the one with a preserved autograph but French version has been considered to be the later/more definite one since… two years ago.
