Been thinking about this one and why “fear of death” and “don’t die” seem to resonate with a lot of young people today. Men and women for millennia used to confront death almost universally in their 20s: men in war, women in childbirth. Suffering was inevitable and death a huge possibility. By your thirties, you had addressed the question of your own mortality, along with everyone else in your generation. Fewer and fewer people go through life confronting death early. The inevitability of death doesn’t go away, of course, but coming to terms with one’s mortality happens much, much later, or in some cases, not at all. My guess is a lot of anxiety culture stems from this one specific change.
I will say, this is something I’ve really started to notice about people. Have they confronted death in some meaningful way. By midlife, the differences become really apparent.
