i've had a solid amount of anxiety for years now. our family has been through absolute hell for the past few years. nightmare material. have seen and experienced the worst that humanity has to offer.

back in september things really nosedived to the point where i was having panic attacks quite literally every single morning and then would sleep for 2-4 hours every afternoon as i was physically exhausted from those attacks.

i was already on anxiety meds but was prescribed more, which ultimately made no difference.

i started throwing everything i could at the wall hoping something would stick.

four months later and i'm now off all meds (for the first time in years) and the low-level anxiety "hum" i've felt every day is completely gone. no panic attacks. just feeling the most normal i've felt in ages.

so what worked?

i really did tried dozens of things, but my hunch is some combination of the following:

1. fixed testosterone levels with TRT
2. microcurrent neurofeedback therapy — i was wary of this at first but there's a lot of research to back it up and i found a noticeable improvement within just a couple of sessions. it's not something that needs to be done long-term and i'm already successfully backing off on treatments.
3. strength training — nothing crazy. just ~30 minutes a day.
4. new therapist — found one that is incredibly practical. very much helps teach frameworks for dealing with things. i leave sessions with tons of notes whereas all my previous experiences with therapy never felt like they were equipping me. my current therapist is very much of the "teach you so you don't have to come back to me" mentality.

maybe just one of those was the key. who knows.

all of that to say: try lots of things. everybody is different. it's solvable and it can get better. 4 months ago my anxiety felt insurmountable. truly debilitating. there were weeks on end where i got absolutely nothing done. i was just trying to survive the day.

i'm now basically anxiety-free and my brain is thinking more clearly than it has in years. my wife (who was crucially supportive of helping figure all of this out) has said numerous times she feels like she's got her husband back. feels like an actual miracle.

/back to regularly scheduled dumb code and art posts
