Much to think about here. There's a reality that companies run on context. Customers see the seams between different contexts, but that doesn't mean context should not exist. What a product feature means to engineering is different than support is different than sales. There isn't one truth. There are many. The same goes for finance. Yes every company has "n" sets of books but that is because finance is a tool for informing decisions and decisions are about context. While it is nice to imagine "one true number" the reality is you do not want everyone deciding based on, for example, how finance is reported in earnings or how engineering measures costs. Much to think about. These are questions the IT world intersecting with finance X sales X marketing X product X Management have wrestled with for its entire history.

9 hours of uninterrupted time on a plane to work on stuff is something I’ve come to appreciate. Somehow I find the plane helpful in focusing. Some combination of the internet sucking so you have to be efficient and no distractions of life.

Was catching up with my dearest friend last night and I stopped and said “it’s crazy we’ve been friends for 35 years.” A month ago, I saw another close friend whom I met at work 20 years ago and she reminded me of an important moment I had completely forgotten. That shared history and knowledge is so rare, and probably becoming more so as people become more mobile and life more ephemeral. Time is its own magic. It heals all wounds and it seals most bonds. Never throw away old things casually.

Actually I think I trained the first ever historical LLM: our OCR correction model ocronos was a full pretrain locked before 1950 and could be used in base model mode. Mostly newspaper sources from Chronicle America.
