it used to be that growing a company meant actually earning more — either by expanding revenue or improving margins. carnegie vertical integration, etc. the market rewarded operational dominance. today, the incentives seem to have flipped: it’s often better to spin off or offload asset-heavy, cash-generating operations and chase higher valuation multiples instead. offshoring, etc. return on capital matters more. customer vs investor driven growth.
