A recurring observation on talent when doing references, though most common in big companies: you rarely hear complaints about mediocre or even “solid” people. Only low performers and high performers. People dislike low performers for the same reason: they don’t perform. When people dislike high performers, they dislike them for different reasons. Everyone has a specific, unique complaint and they’ll talk to you about it for as long as you’re willing to listen. The “solid” reference is often a trap that identifies good, not outstanding, people.
