Twenty years ago, the feminist global development cause at elite American universities was “raising awareness” on the evils of female genital mutilation and pushing governments around the world to ban it. Cousin marriage was so far outside anyone’s theory of “what’s actually happening” that no one thought much about it. Now, you have British medical journals defending female genital mutilation and preaching about how questioning such a practice “stigmatizes the community.” None of this is normal. None of it is good. We have a short window to notice things and wake up to what’s happening.
