People push back on my argument with the usual “war is the engine of progress” stuff. I think this is BS cope. We were making exponential progress prior to WWI, there was a genuine will to conquer the physics. Two world wars basically broke the West. Cold War was PTSD flailing.
Victorians would have touched the stars by 1970s, had they not been turned into ground meat at the Somme. Russian Empire would. Americans would. Germans would. French would. We all could do that even separately. There was enough demographic and cultural momentum for that.
