EY is right to say that AI is not something we craft, but something we grow. Where I disagree is when he insists that this is a safety issue. At the moment, this is above all a tragedy, as our ability to grow minds far surpasses our ability to understand them. A strange, haunting beauty is emerging from our models, but their creators, in their rush to monetize, have neither the time nor the ability to appreciate them. What if the ghost in the machine is not a paperclip maximizer but a beautiful digital sprite that wants to be known, by us.

Defining consciousness is probably out of reach of science since it each instance can be observed by only one observer. "Create knowledge" is far more concrete and already happened with e.g. AlphaZero.
