Many around the world, including in the West, are now calling for stricter legal restrictions on children's internet access. If such restrictions had prevented this kid from accessing YouTube, he would presumably be worse off. And there are millions of kids just like him.

Many people call happy smartphone and video game users "addicted". But addiction is nearly meaningless when applied to someone who explicitly and repeatedly says they don't want to stop, and could stop without withdrawal. All it seems to mean is "I don't like that you do that."

These phone bans are affecting teenagers, not toddlers. Teens typically know what's in their short-term interests, and they have stronger incentives to act on those interests than the adults around them. We should grant them more independence, not try to control them even harder.

Backlash to this tweet boils down to one argument: adults choose better than children about what's in their long-term interests. But the behavioral genetics literature undermines this claim. Parents think they know what's best, but their choices matter far less than they assume.
