Apple hasn't totally missed AI, yet. But that's because we're still early in the Cambrian explosion of consumer AI. They have missed the opportunity to define this era in a way only they could. I get the risk calculus: "missing AI" doesn't hurt iPhone sales. But the context my phone has (biometrics, location, iMessages, photos, app usage) is unmatched. If Apple could unlock this safely and open it to developers, we'd see an explosion of genuinely useful products for billions. Embedding Gemini in Siri? Not the leap we need. Boy, the "could have beens" are piling up....

there's so many reasons this is super hard. OISL, earth-to-ground optical, thermal mgmt, radiation, hardware failures, micro-meteors, etc. it's fascinating that — even so — folks are going for it. really, this feels like a massive critique of regulatory/permitting. should be a CTA for policymakers
