I am a huge fan of Feeding America's allocation mechanism -- it's one of the greatest successes of modern market design, and I wrote a case study about it that I teach multiple times most years.

But it's a tremendous oversimplification to just say "prices worked" in this setting -- their marketplace uses an artificial currency system that was very carefully designed in order to address potential equity concerns among the food banks. They're not just opening up a market, they're *running a marketplace*.

The quote @ArmandDoma highlights below is somewhat out of context because that food bank director, while initially opposed to the idea of using a market allocation on principle, ended up collaborating on the marketplace design and supporting it -- and eventually became one of its most enthusiastic users. But the equity guardrails were important for that outcome(!).

Note that this is a critique of the somewhat oversimplified way the mechanism is often discussed on Twitter, not the cited @WorksInProgMag article, whose author @ejzim does an excellent job of explaining how the mechanism works (as he should -- he took my class 😉!) https://t.co/w2bPZbquWw

I’ve been using the new MacBook Pro M5 since launch and it’s a beast, especially compared to my old M1!

It’s good for running the smaller AI models locally but also everything you do is just so fast.

Here’s Gemma 3 QAT 12B running with MLX:
