One year at OpenAI today ... It has been quite a ride, even more exciting than I expected! I joined as GPT-4.5 was being prepared, got some minor action on o3, and dove deeper for GPT-5. Being a spectator to the multi-modal releases (sora-1, imagegen, sora-2) was also absolutely mad. It's hard to believe that all this happened in 12 months (yes, all these 6 releases are from the last 12 months!!!), and what's coming down the pipeline is yet another step up (as was explained yesterday). But beyond the external releases, the most pleasant part BY FAR has been the internal culture: brilliant yet chill people, focused on work and open-minded about brand new ideas, working in an absolute gold-mine of a field where new gems are uncovered every few days. It's Disneyland for researchers. (Now I just need to never tweet/retweet anything without full on-context, and maybe I will get to spend the next 12 months in an Erdos-drama-free way 🤣. Probably not gonna but one is allowed to dream.)

The problem with tech giants: They tend to attract mercenaries, not visionaries. The obvious byproduct of chasing trends with cash & "proven" teams. None matters when the result is forgettable. Any attempt to produce culture must bet on mavericks, punks, eccentrics, originals.
A sincere creative project MUST spawn from someone's burning desire to express their inner world synthesized over decades of inspiration & life experiences. Gamers are one of the most sophisticated audiences out there: when a project starts for the wrong reasons, it's doomed.
