. @zachweinberg is right on this, but the other problem with just increasing taxes is that there is zero discipline on behalf of politicians to utilize that excess to actually reduce the deficit. I would bet 1,000:1 that any marginal increase in government receipts will be offset by increases in government expenditures. I think there might be a different receptivity to this conversation if there were any evidence that spending increases would be off the table.
