I made a THREAD on HDI the other day. Today, I want to compare the Poverty Alleviation during the Tenure of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Gov of Lagos and Peter Obi as Gov of Anambra. A Thread. 1/
The National Bereau of Statistics (NBS) released statistics of the National Poverty Rates in Nigeria in 2003-2004 and released another one for 2010. We'll do a comparison. According to some Obidients, Peter Obi alleviated poverty in Anambra. Let's fact check that. 2/
In 2004, when Obi assumed office, the poverty rate of Anambra was 41.4%, in 2010, there was a 12.3% increase, taking the poverty index to 53%. Let's break this a little further. According to the 2006 census, 4,177,828 people lived in Anambra, 41.4% of the pop. is 1,729,620, 3/
meaning that, when Obi came into power, 1,729,620 people were living in Poverty in Anambra. Fast forward 6 yrs later to 2010, the poverty rate has increased by 12.3%, which means over 513,000 people have become impoverished under his government after 6 yrs. 4/
That is 2.24M people in total, over half of Anambra people lived in poverty under Obi. His policies worsened the situation. Now let's discuss Lagos under Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In '99, over 72% of Lagosians were living under poverty. In '03 according to the NBS, 69% of Lagosians 5/
were living under poverty. Tinubu left office in 2007, drastically reducing the poverty rate and Fashola continuing from where he stopped, in the NBS poverty stats of 09-2010, the poverty rate of Lagos dropped to 40.3%, a 29% decline in the rate of poverty. 6/
According to the 2006 census, Lagos Population was 9,113,605, and 6.2M out of them lived in poverty. After the Asiwaju Effect, 2.64M people were raised out of poverty in Lagos state, reducing the number of poor people to 3.6M. 7/
Being the smallest state in Nigeria by Landmass and the second most populous at that time, after Kano, we can categorically state that Asiwaju and his team did well. Now some people might come and say Lagos was generating so much revenue than Anambra. 8/
That's true, but let's not forget that the revenue generation was also due to the capacity of Tinubu who took the IGR of Lagos from 600M in 1999 to 21Bn in 2007 (a 3200% increase). That being put aside, from the statistics, we can see states like Kogi with lesser revenue... 9/
...than Anambra, but they reduced poverty from 91% to 67%. A 33% reduction. Bravo to Kogi State. We see Imo who had a similar rate with Anambra in 2003, but were able to reduce the poverty rate to around 30%, while Anambra increased to 53%. 10/
So I need an explanation, how did Obi remove people out of Poverty in Anambra state??? Let's stop lying and deceiving people. Below is the link for that document from the NBS. Enable to get your PVC and vote rightly! 11/
Corrections: 2006 was when Obi assumed Office. Additional info: Willie Obiano reduced the poverty rate drastically to 14.8%. Making it the 8th state on the list Way better than where his predecessor (Obi) left it. In 2019, Lagos' poverty rate has gone down to only 4.5%.
In summary, Lagos no be anybody mate.
