The tombstone of Ratu Mas Malang. Ratu Mas Malang was the wife of Amangkurat I. Previously, she was the wife of Dalang Panjang Mas, a puppeteer who lived since the time of Panembahan Sedo Krapyak. Although already married, Amangkurat I was captivated by Ratu Mas Malang's beauty.
Amangkurat I asked the puppeteer to hand over his wife to him. Dalang Panjang Mas refused. For refusing the king's request, he was killed and buried on Mount Kelir. This is how the love story of Amangkurat I and Ratu Mas Malang began.
Amangkurat I's first encounter with Ratu Mas Malang occurred when the king issued a decree seeking a wife. Amangkurat I was then introduced to the daughter of Ki Wayah, a renowned puppeteer. Her beauty captivated the king.
The king immediately prepared everything necessary to marry the woman. Unfortunately, during the preparations, it was revealed that the woman was already married to Ki Panjang Mas, a puppeteer. However, this did not deter Amangkurat I from seizing the throne.
Queen Mas Malang and brought him to the palace. To avoid unwanted trouble, she issued an order to kill Ki Dalang Panjang Mas.
Since becoming the wife of Amangkurat I, Ratu Mas Malang earned the title "Ratu Wetan." However, the new queen was accused of destroying the royal household. In the book "The Rumble of the Mataram Palace," researcher De Graaf writes that the King's attention was diverted more to Ratu Mas Malang.
After learning that her former husband, Ki Dalang Panjang Mas, had been killed by Amangkurat, Queen Mas Malang cried day and night until she fell ill and died. However, Amangkurat noticed something strange about her death, as before she died, Queen Mas Malang had released a liquid.
Her body emanated a poisoned odor. Because of this incident, an enraged Amangkurat I dragged and punished the court ladies and palace servants. He even had the heart to lock his other wives in their rooms without food until they all died, a total of 40 of them.
The body of Queen Mas Malang was taken to Mount Kelir for burial. In his book, De Graaf mentions that the tomb remained uncovered for several days. Day and night, carrying his son, the king mourned the lifeless body of his beloved.
The king's departure caused chaos in the palace. One night, the king dreamed that Queen Malang had returned with her old husband, Ki Dalang Panjang Mas. Upon waking, he saw that Queen Malang's body was no longer human, and he returned to the palace.
In a fit of rage, he ordered the burial of Queen Malang. Queen Malang's death was a heavy blow to Amangkurat I. According to Dutch officials, the King was unable to govern properly for the next 4-5 years.
