doesn't matter if they lose their job, doesn't matter if warehousing them wastes the taxes paid by 10 productive citizens. We've been trained to treat shareholder value as an unconditional good, but whole industries can work like a crackhead ripping copper out of air conditioners

That jump in private prison stocks was investors pricing in the likely policy result of the 2024 election, and suddenly the quotas and the arrests of legal immigrants like my friend make perfect sense: all that matters is that someone is detained, doesn't matter who they are,

A friend is being detained indefinitely by ICE, so TIL that ~80% of detainees are held in private prisons for which our government pays $190/day = $70k/year! Interesting how the two biggest players got a stock bump around 2024. Who'd want to make the process more efficient?

20. found tranquility and charm that can only be seen at walking speed, met a woman who got me to give a talk to her girl scouts troop, chatted for hours with an Amish guy, camped in the llama barn of an abandoned fairground thru a storm where i feared for my life, great country
