Actually I'm pretty sure the high rankers would be good at actual fighting provided they had the right size stick or sword. But for anyone below an experienced 3-dan you'd just get murdered by someone with even a bit of training in something practical.

This is something I appreciated about kendo. The Japanese are serious about the meta & will ding you for looking like a goober. You can lose a match if your hakama is tied wrong or if you just look lazy. In fact the whole point was the meta -- kendo is impractical for fighting.
