So why and how does any of this work? This is the core insight behind the field of crystallography: 

A crystal's diffraction pattern is the Fourier transform of its electron density.

When X-rays scatter off the regularly repeating atoms in a crystal, they create a diffraction pattern of spots whose positions and intensities encode the 3D structure in reciprocal (Fourier) space. Each spot represents a specific spatial frequency component of the electron density.

Then your task becomes inverting this frequency space representation to recover the real spatial structure.

Here are the results of asking Claude Opus 4.1 my favorite prompt for learning about science:

“What would you say is THE core insight or analytical trick of crystallography?”
