This sparked an interesting memory. I worked at a company where a dev bragged about using recursion for a file-tree like thing. Every render recalculated the open-ness of a node... It worked for hundreds of things, but I inherited the real data set and hand to deal with thousands of things... Recalculating the result of a click was multiple seconds of time. I had to refactor it and I just used a naive lookup table instead.... problem solved. Ugly? sure.. But solved the problem better than "elegant".
