Why are models not so reliable that all "equivalent" prompts work equally well? Because gradient descent produces 'jagged' generalization. But the main axis by which prompt optimizers help is surfacing *new* information about the environment/task that wasn't even explicitly mentioned in the original spec. That can because such information is subtle, low-level, or actually model-dependent*. @ChrisGPotts calls this these 'latent requirements'. *recall that natural language is inherently ambiguous, but resolving that ambiguity varies by speaker.
