Mark Cuban is known to pickup losing political battles (although he is very successful in other endeavours of life. Also, I am big fan of hist Cost Plus Drugs initiative.). His latest fight against open source seems to be another losing political battle. A gift from China: Chinese OSS models is what is resulting in acceleration of AI research, and AI sovereignty for many countries and companies. This movement will continue, as it has a million backers (including like of Nvidia). Trading with China has lifted living standards for billions of people across the world. How Chinese OSS AI models can have western world view? As for China using it to their political advantage - you have to learn about what RAG & Agentic Search is. These approaches help you control model's answers by controlling source. All companies are doing it. Companies like @cursor_ai , @windsurf , @perplexity_ai post train these models with SFT, RL. You can install western world view in the models in that stage. What Chinese did in similar situation? Let us embrace the gift of open source AI; the way Chinese embraced the gift of open source Linux and Android from the west. Today China has their variants for their servers, laptops and phones. China is also eating their own dog food. Chinese OSS AI is accelerating AI research within China. For example Kimi 2 from @Kimi_Moonshot followed @deepseek_ai 's architecture. What if we reject OSS AI? If you be stupid and reject that gift, what you are left with 2/3 labs monopolising the revenue and power (imagine your opponent political party captures these labs, the way it happened with social media companies in lates 2010s! Or that may be Mark Cuban's plan. He plans to run in 2028 on a Dem ticket.)
