There are some kids who will go on to be well rounded and exceptional at many things. Most won’t. “Well rounded” is a myth, one that dissipates as you age. No one describes a man that way at 35. You will be known, paid and encouraged to practice the thing you’re best at for most of your life, and if it’s clear what that thing is early, how wonderful. Childhood can reflect the realities of life without being miserable.
Since so many people ask: my son started piano at age 3.5, mainly to teach him a simple lesson: we have to work and perform, even when we don’t want to. His brother will start next year, too.
