I talk to engineers making $160K remote who feel guilty for not wanting more. They're making $130K to $180K. Working remote. Doing the work they like. But they feel like they should be chasing more. Here's what I think: Not everything is about the title, the company, the power, and the money. If you can work remotely and still take your kids to school, see them at their events, do what you want, or go to lunch with your wife/husband, but you don't get the title of Vice President, CTO, or Head of - keep your great role. A "higher" title might pay $30K to $60K more. But you lose every Tuesday morning. Every school event. Every lunch with your spouse. Is that worth it? If you're chasing a better title to: - Take on more complex projects. - Build new skills. Go for it, it makes sense. But chasing Principal or VP just for the title? Just to make a little more money you won't even notice? That's not a trade worth making. It's all about what you want. If the title matters to you, go get it. If the challenge excites you, take it on. But if you've got a great setup right now, don't let guilt or ego talk you into giving it up. Stick with the path that's going to make you happiest. If you lose money, you can make it back. If you lose time, it's gone forever.
