This was the first year I saw some genuinely incredible Black Friday deals in real life shops

Good lord, there were fr 70-80% discounts happening

4yo came down from her nap and saw me playing Factorio, asked to join.

So far she likes "taking the spiders for walks," so they can "see the bugs."

Also painting each of them different colors.

We're in a race. It's not USA vs China but humans and AGIs vs ape power centralization. @deepseek_ai stan #1, 2023–Deep Time «C’est la guerre.» ®1

prediction: we’ll get some notion of the field of “artificial cognitive science” where people will run artificial tests on AI that you couldn’t do on humans

ex: mimic development via finetuning/training, simulate learning in-context, etc

there’s also a decent chance that none of it maps well onto humans but is interesting on its own for understanding and interpretability for AI systems

To be clear I’m not throwing shade on Jiang and Hu, I don’t know enough about their contributions. I’m just saying that at the time there was plenty of Western concern trolling about the direction of China already, less than now mostly because they were just weaker
