The replies blame the auto industry for pushing for this. Accountability lies with congress. Their job is to hear all sides and find the path to legislate or not. The climate and environmental advocates were right there and had no problem getting the ear of Congress.

So much of what is wrong is that compromise becomes the goal, not a tool. The problem with compromise is not just that no one is happy. The result is almost certainly to complicated to predict first and second order effects. (see also, affordable care act)

Anyone who has worked at a big product company facing a design choice knows that compromise == design by committee --> bad.

apparently gas can be relatively inexpensive. This price is practically *half* the California or Washington state averages. Wonder why?

It is so weird/difficult for me to watch the arc of the PC. This is starting to look like the (custom) PC is like a vintage car with expensive harder to find parts.

Was on a plane Monday talking with person next to me.

In my working life I've gone from having to explain what software was, what Microsoft was, and what a mouse was, and even what the internet was. Then to the awe of "you work at Microsoft can you help me with Word numbers" to the eyeroll "monopolist", and this week..."I've never used a PC".

What an arc. I never would have expected that. 🙏
