OpenAI is in an interesting situation here (re: ads) Best in class ads monetization (Meta) is ~$250 per year for U.S. users, which is roughly equal to the ChatGPT Plus ARPU So, you could serve ads just to free users, or even double revenue from paid users If their commerce bet pays off, you could imagine they make more from affiliate on purchases than ads…and you run the risk of ads making people not transact on the platform (don’t trust the recs) And the worst case scenario would mean ads make users switch to Claude or Gemini as their core LLM
