Goodbye Webpack, Hello Vite 👋

When I first wrote about using modern JavaScript with Django back in 2020, the state-of-the-art in terms of tooling was Webpack and Babel. But the JavaScript world doesn't stay still for long.

About a year ago, I started using Vite as a replacement for my Webpack toolchain on all my projects, and I'm super happy with the change. It's faster, easier to set up, and lets you do some very nice things like auto-refresh your app when JS/CSS changes.

I've finally taken the time to revisit my "Modern JavaScript for Django Developers" series and update it with what I feel is the best front end setup for Django projects in 2025. There are three parts to this update:

1. A new written article in the series.
2. A video walkthrough of the same content.
3. An open-source repo with the finished product.

Link. 👇

This was a great listen - a very personal / transparent look into the rise and decline of the Tailwind template business.

There are a lot of similarities with what I've gone through in the last year with Pegasus. The two things that resonated the most:

1. How frustrating it is to not be able to figure out *why revenue is changing*. Is it market saturation? Open source? AI? And so on. It's such a weird and frustrating feeling to see your income changing and have no idea why or how to address it. Not something you mind while the number keeps going up, but very difficult when it goes flat or down.

2. Having your self-worth tied up in your success in a way that a number going down makes you feel like crap *even when everything in your life is still going great*. Like Adam, on absolute terms everything in my life is beyond what I want or need—financially and otherwise. But it still hurts more than it should to see something I've invested so much into on the decline.

Anyway, mostly just appreciated the share. Kudos to @adamwathan for talking about this when most would just stay silent.

That said, you'd have to get over the "meeting online" stigma all over again, which might be totally intractible

I know that is kind of called "school" but 1) apps are easier for introverts, 2) parenting styles can be hard to suss out, and most importantly 3) it is incredibly useful to know someone else is actively seeking parent friends

There should be a Tinder-like app for parents to make friends with other dads/moms/couples based on age of kids and parenting style.

YouTube thumbnails are definitely one place I don't mind introducing more slop to the world.

The whole concept of YT thumbnails is already slop-adjacent.
