One of the main difference between junior and senior engineers in any company is that later ones understand existing code bases really well (due to either their long tenures, or due to their learnt skill of reading vast code bases). This makes junior engineers highly reliant on senior engineers in many matters. This results in pay differences as well.

Hence, Having crystal clear understanding of the code is very critical.

New code bases with vibe coding:

Vibe coding often leads to a situation where you don't understand your code's flow anymore and beyond a point, the progress slows down. Almost negating the benefits.

One way to deal with this is making mermaid flow diagrams of your code, and it certainly helps. You can ask questions to your coding agent as well (e.g. Cascade in Windsurf), but it can be lot of work.

 @cognition team takes this idea and makes it systematic with Code Maps. This new feature has both visual maps as well as drill down text descriptions. So very useful to understand what is going on in the code and exactly where a change is needed to make certain feature addition/change.

This way while vibe coding you won't lose sight of how the code exactly works. This will ensure rapid progress making you into a very effective engineer when it comes to developing new application or maintaining existing code bases.
