hmm this is a surprise - Wired notes that the GPT5.2 changelog also had a footnote saying GPT5's big deal router is removed, model selector is back for most users (meaning most normies will just get 5.2 Instant). did not quite see this coming but retroactively makes sense. people want fast defaults and to have control over when they go slow + smart. now i actually doubt that the router will actually come back as claimed. predictability and quick response are important, users can be trusted to click a button for more intelligence.
