Philosophically, I think there is a reasonable stance that the point of science is to educate and uplift people. AI religion sounds silly; if someone said AI could achieve nirvana the claim would be dumb at best. Similarly, an "AI scientist" may miss the point of science. 

AI algorithms to facilitate new discoveries are here already and will only grow more capable. But the human pursuit of science is only uplifted as far as these tools are capable of teaching deeper insights to scientists

My two cents as someone who has worked on AI for science for a long time. This discussion is still premature. AI methods are just a tool like so many others. Science is really hard and there aren't magic bullets. For AI researchers without scientific experience, it is easy to overestimate the impact of AI. Rule of thumb, benchmarks are limited when it comes to out of distribution scientific questions

I agree with all of this. AI policing is much less useful than just reverting to in class pencil and paper exams.
