On reading this @paulg essay, it really clicked why socialists & communists fit a certain profile: They're not only people who got where they are by gaming some system (academia, media), but they also don't think there's any other way to win b/c this is How It All Works.
They look at successful founders & immediately the 1st question they ask is: What quirks of the System did you game to get where you are? The second one is: How do we rig the game so that ppl w/ values I like better start winning, instead of this jerk?
How to Win Friends is still the best book for autists, engineers, neurotics or anyone who thinks they’re smart but can’t seem to get ahead. There is so much alpha in consistently showing up refreshed, being interested, asking questions and smiling for no reason at all.
My dad gave me this book in middle school. It’s a great book for weird kids who eventually go on to be productive and somewhat normal. And a good habit to form young, during puberty, when all tweens and teens are trapped inside their own heads and need a roadmap for escape.
