I signed the offer letter that day. I drove back down to LA. Put in my 2-week notice and started at LinkedIn the Monday after. I slept on the couch for a while, shared a room with my (friend from a college org), then eventually made enough money to afford my own room — which was a luxury at the time. But that role was a catalyst for my entire career. From that role, I got into social media marketing, I met the founder of the startup I led growth for, I met my future boss who helped me land my a16z job, and I have made probably hundreds (if not thousands) of incredible other relationships.
In closing, if I had to offer any advice to young people, it would be this: Relationships rule the world. So put yourself out there. Join clubs, organizations, do side projects, attend events, and seriously consider moving to the city where there’s a high density of people who do what you want to do. Work hard at nurturing relationships over the years. Keep in touch with people. Share updates with your network about what you’re up to. Support others in their work & endeavors. Keep doing this long enough, and you will increase the surface area for luck to happen to you.
